Once infamous for its frothing and flaming lakes, Bengaluru has turned a corner in sewage management. In March 2025, the city was awarded ₹103 crore in central government incentives for its strides in treating wastewater, ranking second nationally among 399 evaluated cities, just behind Surat.

A major milestone in this achievement: 23 of the city’s 30 sewage treatment plants (STPs) received 5-star ratings, six earned 4 stars, and one got a 3-star rating. The Bellandur Lake, once a symbol of urban environmental neglect, now reflects progress, with treated wastewater being used to replenish the city’s non-perennial lakes.

“Treated wastewater is essential for sustaining Bengaluru’s lakes,” said S Vishwanath, a water expert deeply involved with government and non-profit efforts. He highlighted that around 15 MLD (million litres per day) of treated water is being used to generate power at Jakkur, and some is redirected to water-scarce regions like Chikkaballapur and Kolar.

However, challenges remain, especially in sewage collection and monitoring treated water quality. Experts believe that a robust, treated water reuse system can fuel agriculture, industry, and ecological restoration, turning Bengaluru into a model for urban water sustainability.
