Liberty Media Corp., the owner of Formula One, has agreed to buy Dorna Sports, the commercial rights’ holder of MotoGP in a deal valued at around USD 4.5 billion (4.2 billion euros).

The media giant will acquire approximately 86% of Dorna, whereas Dorna management will retain approximately 14% of the equity in the business. The deal is expected to be completed by the end of the year 2024. Formula One is the highest class of four-wheeler street/circuit racing, while MotoGP is the same for two-wheelers i.e. motorcycle road racing events.

According to Markets & Data, this acquisition not only consolidates Liberty Media’s dominant position in the motorsport industry but also provides scope for cross-promotional opportunities between MotoGP and Formula One. Moreover, Liberty Media will strengthen its fan engagement, optimize media rights agreements, and push sponsorship deals by increasing control over both premier racing series.
